About the Grant
$22,000 to support THE SHIPMENT (MAP 2007), a new hip-hop African-American identity politics performance work written by Young Jean Lee, a Korean-American.
About the Project
THE SHIPMENT is a hip-hop African-American identity-politics piece written and directed by Young Jean Lee, a Korean-American. Continuing Young Jean's artistic mission of working with subject matter that makes her uncomfortable, THE SHIPMENT will employ hip-hop dancing, African dance, rapping, and seminal African-American literature to create an extremely awkward celebration of blackness--an uneasy exploration of ethnic appropriation that combines hip-hop virtuosity with cultural cluelessness.
