About the Grant

$20,000 to support Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers (MAP 2005), a new play written by William S. Yellow Robe, Jr. and directed by Lou Bellamy.

About the Project

Penumbra opened its 2005-2006 season with Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers, a new play written by William S. Yellow Robe, Jr. and directed by Lou Bellamy. The play examines racial identity and prejudices faced by a family descended from a Native-American grandmother and an African American grandfather, a member of the famous post-Civil War cavalry regiment nicknamed "buffalo soldiers" for their curly, dark hair. Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers asks audiences to consider their racial and cultural identity, while maintaining a compassionate and open-minded view of the complexity of mixed race heritage in America, and the Native Community.

Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers is a collaboration with Trinity Repertory of Providence, Rhode Island.
