About the Grant

$15,000 to support Legacy Creations commissioning playwright Lynn Nottage to create and develop a new full-length play with music, based on the radio drama Sweet Billie and the Zooloos (MAP 2005).

About the Project

Legacy Creations Inc. (a.k.a. Colored Girl Productions) is commissioning playwright Lynn Nottage to create and develop a new full-length play with music, based on the radio drama Sweet Billie and the Zooloos. It is the story of a child who is banished from her planet because she is different from her community. In search of a new home, she travels through the universe encountering others, who are seemingly similar but realizing she doesn’t fit their culture or environment. Still she enriches their lives and changes their old habits. Missing her home she returns to her planet only to find a once peaceful and vibrant world in total disarray. The elders discover that in order to progress they must make room for each generation’s unique expression. The moral—we have to allow youth to create their own beat.

Legacy Creations is dedicated to producing new works and the classics influenced by the African Diaspora for young people and their families. Legacy’s mission is to enhance possibilities of the American theatre by accessing, educating and reaching urban youth with plays by significant playwrights commissioned, developed and produced especially for this audience.
